Environmental Impact — What Do We Know?

The manufacturer presents the BioBall as “the world’s first biodegradable pickleball.”

According to independent tests cited by the manufacturer, the BioBall “is expected to fully decompose in 3–5 years under normal landfill conditions in the United States,” in contrast to traditional pickleballs, which can take “100 years or more” to break down.

Additionally, the BioBall is designed to be more durable: a single ball can last “up to 5 times longer” than a traditional pickleball — meaning fewer balls used and discarded over time, helping reduce the overall volume of waste.

In their marketing, they highlight that using BioBall helps “reduce plastic waste” generated by the massive increase in pickleball play around the world.

The manufacturer explicitly acknowledges that the BioBall does not meet the legal definition of “biodegradable” according to several regulatory standards — for example, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines in the United States, which require a product to fully degrade within one year under standard conditions.

In other words: although the ball contains a “decomposition-accelerating additive” and may degrade within 3–5 years under certain conditions, this does not guarantee identical behavior in every environmental context (climate, landfill characteristics, microbiology, humidity, etc.). Decomposition depends heavily on specific environmental factors.

They also state that they “do not make claims of recyclability, compostability, degradability or biodegradability” in accordance with federal standards.

The BioBall — and therefore the Komodo BioBall K-40 — offers a more sustainable alternative compared to traditional pickleballs: because they are more durable, players use fewer balls each season; and once discarded, their composition allows for significantly faster breakdown (theoretically 3–5 years vs. several decades or centuries for conventional plastics).

However, it is not a “100% eco-friendly guaranteed ball.” Its biodegradation depends on specific landfill conditions and it is not certified as “biodegradable” under the regulations of many countries. For that reason, when selling it on your e-commerce site, it is best to present these benefits honestly — for example: “designed to reduce environmental impact” or “formulated to break down faster than conventional plastics under suitable conditions,” rather than absolute claims like “eco-friendly” or “100% biodegradable.”
